Going to school

I’ve decided to earn my Esthetician License in order to better the business.  I started attending an Esthetician program a little over a month ago.  I am interested in skin care and love to learn how the body works.  My company, SunKissed uses a fabulous product line by Body Bronze Products, which was developed by a skin cancer survivor along with her dermatologist.  SunKissed is not about vanity.  We are about knowledge and healthful beauty, taking care of the entire person.  Yes, we all feel better with a healthy glow but the driving force behind SunKissed is healthy skin, which is why our motto is, “Love Your Skin.”

Did you know that your skin is your largest organ?  AND the better you take care of your skin, i.e. eat properly, drink enough water, take off your make up at night, exfoliate, moisturize, etc. your skin looks glowy.  The healthier your skin, the better light can reflect off of it and give you a natural glow.  (Something I learned in school :0))

Anyhoo…wanted to let y’all know what’s going on with SunKissed.  I have to earn 750 hours and pass the State Board Exam.  If I am a good girl, and go to school everyday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, then I will be able to complete the program by mid-end of December.  I’ll be in touch.

SPF…what it means for YOU!

Thank you Jamie for joining us on our Facebook Page today!  The question was, “What does SPF stand for?”  Jamie was the first to answer correctly and win a $5 Starbucks gift card!  Cheers!

SPF or Sun Protection Factor refers to time spent in the sun without getting burned while wearing the agent.  SPF 15 means that you should be able to stay in the sun 15 times longer than you can without sunscreen.

Theoretically, if you burn in 10 minutes without sunblock, SPF 15 is supposed to protect your skin for 150 minutes or 2.5 hours.

If you apply SPF 70, then you can stay in the sun for 700 minutes or 11.67 hours.

Now, if you are fair-skinned like I am, we all know that spending over 10 hours in the sun without reapplying is ludicrous.  We must remember to be aware of our sweat factor, wind, altitude, swimming, running, the body’s hydration, etc.  Generally, I reapply every couple of hours.  Because I apply sunblock liberally, I tend to stay fair.  AND this is why I choose to Get SunKissed!

Really, anything at 30 SPF should work if you are having to reapply anyway!  Even if you use a well-formulated sunscreen, 2-3% of the sun’s rays can still get through.  This is why some people can still get some color with sunblock.

Check it out!  Rod Ryan on 94.5 the buzz is talking about wearing Sunscreen.  Look at the difference on this man’s face.  He was a truck driver for many years.  Can you tell which side of his face got more sun over the years?

As a kid, I remember having two really bad burns growing up.  The first time, we were in Florida visiting Disney World and I fell asleep outside in the sun on a lounge chair.  Ooohhh…  I remember having to miss school for a week after we got back home so that my skin could heal.  The second bad burn was in middle school.  We went to Galveston, Texas for spring break.  It was cloudy outside so I didn’t put any sunscreen on.  I was young and thought, “the sun isn’t as strong today with the clouds in the way”.   So DUMB!  I did not even realize that I was getting fried.  I was a lobster afterwards.  Ouch!  We didn’t care about wrinkles or skin cancer!  Now that I am a few years wiser, I do care about wrinkles and sun damage.  I certainly don’t want to end up looking like Magda from the movie, There’s Something About Mary.

Why does this matter to you?  If you are one of the many who has their own memories of being badly burned at a young age, hopefully you will agree that a little bit of effort goes a long way.  It’s important to apply sunscreen daily to protect the face and body from the daily sun damage.

It’s easy to do!  Buy a moisturizer that has an SPF of at least 15.  A great option is GO!screen, new product that you can find at your local Whole Foods.  It’s light, natural, convenient and ONLY $15.00!

Where ever you are it’s important to protect your skin.  It’s the only skin you have!  Protect your eyes from the sun as well.  Wear a pair of cute sunglasses and/or a fun hat.  Be smart and healthy so you can enjoy and have fun in the sun!

Sincerely,

SunKissed

Simplicity Creates Health (and healthy skin!)

There are many things in life that have simple answers to seemingly complicated dilemmas.  When we have a headache, are stressed, low on energy, have trouble focusing at work, seem to be down and negative all of the time.  Keep saying that we want to do xyz but never do.  What is it that keeps us from becoming who we want to be?  From the living the life that we dream of and that we have always wanted?  We always have a reason, some sort of excuse or a bad behavior that we can’t seem to break.  The truth is that the answer is simple most of the time.  We should always try the easy solutions first before we go looking for a complex answer to our “complex” question.

A few easy solutions:

  • Drinking enough water
  • Breathing deeply
  • Proper rest
  • Quality nutrition
  • Choosing to act

All of the above practices are healing in themselves.  It’s as simple as that.  We look for complex answers from a doctor or an expert when really, all we need to do is go back to the basics.  We have to take care of ourselves.

First, drinking enough water is crucial to your well-being, physically and mentally.  We wonder why doctors tell us to drink eight to ten glasses of water a day.  One good reason is that your body is made up of 85% water.  Water is used to transport nutrients to your vital organs, helps rid the body of toxins, cools your temperature if you live in a warm environment, provides mental clarity.  There is a fascinating article, Can Sipping Water Make You Smarter? that discusses the many roles that water plays.  Basically, water helps to aid concentration and retention in adults and children.  If you are tired at work or have trouble focusing, take note of your water intake.  Try drinking the recommended amount for three days and see if you notice a difference.  If you don’t, no harm, no fowl.

The second easy solution is something that we do everyday, all day and we naturally take it for granted, BREATHING.  Personally, I feel much better if I take even 5 minutes out of my day to clear my mind, sit or lie down, relax every muscle in my body and breathe deeply.  Breathe in…breathe out…breathe in…breathe out…There are many ways and places to do this.  Yoga, meditation, prayer, taking a walk outside, at work in the bathroom, in the privacy of your own home when no one is around, anywhere really!  Breathing deeply rids your body of toxins, relaxes your mind and body, provides clarity and calmness, and cleanses your internal organs.  It’s amazing to feel the benefits of concentrated, intentional breathing.  Who knew!  When you start feeling on edge, foggy or blase, take 5 minutes to yourself and just breathe.

Third, resting your body is essential to your health and mood!  No one wants to be around a cranky person!  Not getting enough restful sleep affects mental sharpness, energy levels and your body.  If your body does not have down time, it is difficult to perform at your optimal level.  It can take more time to accomplish a task than necessary at school, work or at home.  Plus it’s no fun feeling sluggish all day!  While you sleep, your body is repairing itself from the days damage: working out, cortisol production from daily stress, kids, sun exposure, digestion, etc.  Our bodies are always working hard just to keep us alive and functioning.  When you’re feeling tired and worn out from the day, it’s important to be good to yourself and rest.
Fourth, quality nutrition!  What we put into our mouths matters!  It’s just like a car, if you put crappy dirty fuel into it, the car is not going to perform and it’s going to break down eventually.  BUT, if you put premium fuel into your car, it’s going to run like a champ!  Nature gives us everything we need.  Stick to natural foods, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, no sugar, no processed junk!  A great starting point and resource is thepaleodiet.com.  Remeber, food is personal.  Not everyone has the same body and everybody reacts differently to differnt foods.  So experiment.  See what works for you and what doesn’t.  Don’t subscribe to a certain diet.  Try them all, see how you feel and see what can be maintained for life.  Food choices are life choices.  A friend Jenna Sneed with Thrive Studios is a nutritionist, yoga instructor and she practices what she preaches!  If you are struggling with where to start, Jenna is the woman for you!  Contact her and she will sit down with you, go over your nutrition goals, set a plan and stick with you through the entire process!

Finally, the most important act is the power to choose.  We have the ability to make choices to act and actually do what we want.  Many times we’re afraid of the unknown, whether it’s good or bad.  So we make up excuses, or genuinely have valid reasons for why we can’t do something.  It takes alittle bit of nerve to go out, try something, not knowing how it’s going to turn out.  That’s okay; that’s normal.  It’s part of self-preservation.  The reason I bring this up is because many times we are unhappy in our current situaltion and we think that we can’t change the situation or we are afraid.  It’s okay to be afraid.  I am afraid alot but I find it exciting.  Even though I might not do something the right way the first time, I will learn from that experience and eventually learn how to get better and better.  It’s part of life and growth.  We can’t get better unless we try.  Many times, it’s painful, embarrassing, we feel vulnerable but so what.  I learned to laugh at myself along time ago.  It’s no fun taking yourself so seriously.  If there is something in your life that you want to do, go do it.  Set a goal, research it, learn about it, and go do it!

Sincerely,
SunKissed

3 simple ways to save your skin:

Simple things like wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are three easy ways to protect your skin.

Wrinkles, age spots,  and skin cancer are not issues that I want to be dealing with especially now in my late twenties.  It only gets more difficult as we grow older.  Just like saving money or eating a healthy diet, starting early is the key to success.  Be consistent and your chances for beautiful skin improve tremendously.

Remember that not everyone’s skin is created equally regarding the sun’s damaging rays.  Everyone has their own skin type based on the Fitzpatrick Skin Type:
